Guanacaste was the region of the country contributing more banana workers to the South. In 1950, 6,767 residents of Osa, Golfito and Aguirre (19 % of the total population), were guanacastecos (Cerdas; 1993: 152). Thousands travelled from their savannah in the North to “the Zone,” fleeing misery and “deprivations.” Many had heard stories of boys returning with new clothes and shoes, telling adventure stories of a world where you could live better.
