CHINESE MIGRATION

The Chinese and their descendants constitute another important ethnic group in the region. Their presence dates back to the nineteenth century at El Pozo, today Ciudad Cortés, where mention is made of Wong and the Sing from those times. With the banana boom, El Pozo gained importance as a river port and business center, with great participation from new Chinese families managing shops, department stores, bars and other commercial establishments as is the case of the Chan, Sanchún, Apuy and Tak, among others.

The presence of the Chinese in Ciudad Cortés is recorded in a picture from the beginning of the 50’s, property of Delia Chan.

The picture is from the years 51 or 52.  The corner house to the left is from the Wong family.  The house extends for almost 50 meters. The sign is an ad from the Tracopa agency, but there are also a bakery shop, corner store, grocery store, shop and a bar in the same place. Half a block, there was a drugstore called “Botica del Pueblo,” belonging to Luis Samper; the facilities belonged to Domingo Chang. After the drugstore there was Aurorita Wong’s house, married to Emilio Chang. Their children were born there and his family thrived. Always on this block but on the other side was the movie theater Chiank Kai- Shek, and the coffe shop, Flora, belonging to the Wong family, don Benjamín and doña Flora. Also around the corner was the National Bank and María and Salvador Wong had a bar and saloon Victoria, famous for its marimba balls.

In the front block (right hand) you can see two buildings.  The higher one with ferns is the house of the Chan family, and the smaller one, in the background, corresponds to government offices, police station, jail, post office, telegraph office and municipality. In the higher levels, on both sides there are ferns. These were dwellings, as stated. Over the street runs the railway that headed to the fincas of the families Web, Olazo and Rodríguez. Both blocks were burned down during the fire of 1973.
